Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The objective of this project to gain “new perspective of great subduction zone earthquakes by the super-deep drilling has been accomplished through the following results of investigation; high velocity slip is possible along the plate boundary even near the trench, all the fault forming materials are weaken under the high velocity slip, and the fluid is quite key material to understand the fault mechanisms and earthquake mechanisms. These new perspectives were obtained from an integrated research of traditional seismology, geophysics with geology, geomorphology, geochemistry, rock and soil mechanics and others. Such an integlation is also an important aspect of this project. New technology of super-deep drilling for science also contributed a lot to develop the new perspective of the earthquake in subduction zone.
