About KAKEN: Database of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
1.What is KAKEN?
KAKEN is the database which is established and provided by the National Institute of Informatics (NII) with support of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
It is a part of "GeNii, the National Institute of Informatics academic content portal", established by NII.
2.Outline of KAKEN
Database of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research contains the "Project Selected" documents and the research report summaries (incl. annual and final). The Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research is granted whole field of science, and this database provides the latest information of the research projects in Japan exhaustively.
Notice:
Not all projects have the complete set of "selected" and "annual / final report" documents because of the difference in the archiving coverage of each document type. The project information could be modified after selection has been done for some reason, such as declination.
3.Data types

4.Research Categories
The Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research has its own categories of research.
Those categories have been modified in several years.

The Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research has "List of Categories, Areas, Disciplines and Research Fields".
Those fields have been modified in several years.

Notice
Research projects in some categories have no field distinction.

6.Information Source
There are two information sources.
1.Mandated Reports
- Annual Report
Most of annual reports are not archived at libraries in principle. - Final Report
Final reports must be archived at the National Diet Library, and most institutions filed them of those researchers who were their principal investigators.
There are missing reports in some categories.
It means the existence of the final report that there is the "final research report summary" information in KAKEN.
