Search-related General Questions
There are two buttons to execute search for research projects and researchers. How is it the relationship between research projects and researchers?
For research projects, users can search and find awards information including selected project basic information and achievement reports as well as in the previous system. The system shows research projects in the search results. As a new function, users can also search and find researchers who have participated in the research projects. The system shows researcher information including a list of research projects the one have participated in, related research fields, related keywords, collaborators, and the affiliations during project years.
What is the difference between "free words" text field and a set of text fields for advanced search?
For easy search, users put keywords in the "free words" field. For more detailed search, users put keywords in the advanced search text fields that can be opened and closed by clicking the advanced search link. The advanced search text fields refer to the attributes in the research project page and the researcher page.
In advanced search, I looked up the research fields list and then clicked a "health and sports science" field which is a subfield of "interdisciplinary field" on the unified classification tab. Then, the text "/sports science/ OR /athletics/ OR /applied health science/ OR /body education/" appears automatically in the "research field" text field. What's happened?
Most of research projects under the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research can be classified into research fields. The list of these research fields is an appendix of the grant application document, and has been revised in a proper period of time. Therefore, each list of research fields appear in separated tab on the system for a period of fiscal years. The research fields are structured into the four layers of categories, areas, disciplines and research fields. The research field as a leaf of the structure is written in a data field of the research project information.
By selecting a research field keyword in the list, all related research fields as leaves of the structure are automatically put in the "research field" text field in advanced search. A keyword between two slashes (ex. /keyword/) means an exact matching. "OR" in between keywords means to require existence of either keyword.
Can I search this database with logic operations?
Yes, you can. There is a set of logic operations for search, such as "AND" and "OR". "AND" means both, "OR" means either. Space between keywords means the same as "AND". For further details, please read the help page.
Can I search this database with exact matching for keywords or researcher names?
Put the keyword or the name between "/ (slash)" for exact matching. For example, you can write a keyword such as "/computer science/". For researcher name, you can write a name such as "/Yamada Jun/". Its result doesn't include "Yamada Jun'ichi". For more details, please read the help page.
Can I search the full-text in report PDFs using quick search?
No. Use "Full-text in Report (PDF)" field.
It seems that some PDFs cannot be found by full-text search. Why?
The full-text search index is build using the text extracted from report PDFs.
Unfortunately, some reports cannot be found which contain no text data or which contain partial text other than mathematical expressions, figures and tables.
The snippet in the search result is different from the report PDF text. Why?
The snippet is based on the text extracted from report PDFs.
OCR (optical character recognition) may be used for text extraction, and it may cause recognition errors.
When using Safari browser, the category / field / institution items which were picked up in the lists were not shown in the query form immediately, but shown after I collapsed and expanded the advanced search form.
Update your Safari browser to 5.1 or later.
When using Safari browser, the category / field / institution items which were picked up in the lists were not shown but previously-chosen items were added again.
Re-configure your Safari browser so that the UserAgent contains "Safari".
Research Project Search Related Questions
How should I do to find a research project by a research project number of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research?
Please open advanced search text fields, and put a research project number into the referred text field, then search the research project.
How should I do to find all research projects performed in the Tokyo Univ.
Please put "/The University of Tokyo/" as a canonical institution name into the referred text field, and search research projects. Or, please choose and click the referred institution name from the institution list.
University of Library and Information Science have been merged into Tsukuba University. Can I find research projects performed in University of Library and Information Science by putting "/Tsukuba University/" in the research institution text field.
No, you cannot. You will get search results related only to Tsukuba University. If you want to search research projects related to both universities, please put "/University of Library and Information Science/ OR /Tsukuba University/" in the research institution text field, and then search research projects.
How can I find research projects of Taro Yamada as a principal investigator?
Please put "/Taro Yamada/" (// means exact matching) into the researcher name text field, check the check-box of "principal investigator only", and then search research projects.
There are links from achievement list items of annual project reports and final achievement reports to CiNii, Ichushi-Web, international electronic journals on the web. How do you implement this function?
This system automatically generates web links for achievement list items by i-Linkage system invented by Prof. Akiko Aizawa in National Institute of Informatics. i-Linkage system computes identification scores of achievement list items with external electronic journals article information. It uses bibliographic records of CiNii, Ichushi-Web, and CrossRef (an international electronic journal's article reference database on the web). Currently, at April 1st 2009, there are 3,360,704 achievement list items, and 1,648,958 of them are linked to external journal web pages. The accuracy of identification is 97.5% (by a sampling investment).
Researcher Search Related Questions
When I search researchers by name, I get a result including partially matched names. How can I find researchers by exact matching names?
Put a researcher name between two slashes (ex. /Yamada Jun/) at researcher search. This means exact matching. For example, if you search Jun Yamada, please put "/Yamada Jun/" in a text field. This search results don't include "Yamada Jun'ichi" 's information. For more details, please check the help page.
My researcher page doesn't cover my full affiliation history. Why is it?
The affiliation list on a researcher page consists of affiliations, departments, and job titles extracted from research projects in which the one participated.
My name on my page is represented by Kanji and Katakana. English name (Roman characters) doesn't appear. Another researcher page has Kanji, Katakana, and English name. Why is it?
This system automatically extract and compile necessary information from research project data by researcher identification number as a key, to build researcher pages. Therefore, if there is an English name described in a project report, the researcher page has the English name. English names appear in final researcher report summaries (English).
What are collaborators listed in researcher pages?
Collaborators in a researcher page refer to principal investigators, co-investigators listed in research projects in which the researcher participated.
Inquiries About Errors in This Database
I found an error on my research project page. Whom should I ask for correcting the error?
Please contact a KAKEN system section of our institute. For detail contact information, please check this page. We constantly correct errors in our database from users' feedbacks.
I have two researcher numbers of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, and two researcher pages. Whom should I ask for integrating two pages?
Please contact a KAKEN system section of our institute. For detail contact information, please check this page. Researcher numbers are unique and assigned to researchers. As a general rule, one researcher has one researcher number for whole academic life. In some irregular cases, some researcher numbers are assigned to one researcher. Please tell us both researcher numbers to integrate researcher pages.
