Quick Search

1.Language Switch

Contents of a document are shown in the original language by which the document was written.

3.Search Condition Entries

When two or more conditions are specified, conjunction ; that is, projects / researchers matched with all conditions are shown.

Alphabetical and numeric characters are matched on a word-by-word basis. Japanese characters are done on a character-by-character basis. Click here for details.
Strings separated by spaces are recognized as a conjuctional query. Word orders are ignored.

When syntax errors in your queries are detected, error messages are shown above the form (See the example below)

1.Clear Conditions

Click here to clear entries and reset choices, except for the free word entry.

2.Entries for Research Fields, Categories and Institutions

Three methods are available for entering the research fields, categories and institutions:

  • Enter names into the entries.
  • Choose names from the lists.
  • Choose names in the search results or project / researcher details.

3.Entry for Keywords

Matched on the keywords described in the project documents.

4.Entry for Researcher Name

Without checking "Restrict to principal investigators only", matched on the names of principal investigators and collaborators.

It is available to exact-match with full-, first- or last-name. Many researcher records can be also retrieved by readings in katakana and alphabetic notations.

5.Entries for Research Project Number and Researcher Number

Researcher Number specified in a project search restricts the results to projects which the researcher took part in.

Research Project Number specified in a researcher search restricts the results to researchers who took part in the project.

6.Entry for Project Year

You can specify only "not earlier than" or "not later than".

"Restrict to project start year only" restricts the results to projects which started in the specified range.

7.Entries for Total Budget Amount

You can specify only "not less than" or "not much than".

8.Entry for Publications

Matched on the publication titles, authors, published years and journal titles.

9.Chooser for Domestic/Foreign Industrial Property

Because no distinctive information in the documents was written before FY2009, choose "None specified" for searching projects before FY2009 and for searching researchers who took part in those projects.

10.Entries for Right Application / Issue Date

8-digit numbers are interpreted as year+month+day. 6 digits as year+month, 4 digits as year.

You can specify only "not earlier than" or "not later than".

To search the projects which applied some industrial property in the specified year, enter the same year to "from" and "to" entries.

11.Entry for Project Latest Year

You can specify only "not earlier than" or "not later than".

1. Field List for Each Period

Research field list is updated at intervals of several years.

If you know the year when the project was done, click the tab of the year and choose the field name you wanted.

"Unified Fields" tab contains all names of the research fields shown in the documents.

After click the field name, the search form appears again. The field name you specified was appended to the entry for research field.

Research fields form a hierarchy for each period. When a field containing some sub fields are selected, all the sub field names are appended.

Click here for refining the search conditions. The specified field / category / institution name is put into the corresponding entry, and then the search result will be updated.

Previous condition (if existed) will be overrode with the specified name.

5.Related Keywords

Click here for refining the search conditions. The specified keyword is put into the "Keywords" entry, and then the search result will be updated.

6.Export Functions

Select data format and click "Go" button to export whole search results to a local file.

7.Results-per-Page Modifier

Select one and click "Go" button, and then the search results will be updated.

KAKEN provides the OpenSearch interface to accept search request via the browser's search bar.

Notice: the following explanation is for the Internet Explorer 7.

Background of ▼ mark indicates OpenSearch-available.

Show the start page of the KAKEN, and the background color of ▼ mark in the browser search bar will turn into orange or blue.

Click the ▼ mark, select "Add Search Providers" and click "KAKEN - Research Project Search" or "KAKEN - Researcher Search".

Tokenizing & Normalization Rule

Word-oriented

The continuous characters of the same type are recognized as a "token".

English Alphabets and Number Symbols
Cases & widths are ignored.
non English Alphabets
Cases & widths are ignored with some exceptions.
Other Symbols
Widths are ignored with some exceptions.

Character-oriented

Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji

Widths are ignored of Katakana.

Conjunctive Search Expressions

Strings separated with a space (or more) are treated as "conjunctive search" expression. Word orders are ignored.

Strings + "*" pattern means a prefix match, that is, all words beginning with the specified strings are matched.

Exact Match for Researcher Names

"/" + researcher's name (full-, first- or last-name) + "/" pattern means an exact match. It is useful to retrieve not "山田一郎" but "山田一".

The upper-cased "OR" and the operator "|" between the strings indicates "disjunctive search".
