Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the era of global competition, small & medium sized cities as well as large cities have been required their international competitiveness. There is a hint for this in the Finnish regional policy. This country has built a unique strategy to establish diverse and many “growth centres” all over the country, and to support them by networking among centres. The purpose of this study is to show the development process and the current situation for finding policy implications. While the policy supports have been reduced under the recent economic stagnation and the political attitude, there are some cases which develop into national or international centres of specific sectors or segments even in peripheral small & medium sized cities. Plus, the study on the policy changing process found development of national institutions through learning diverse experimentation in regional economies, which implies the significance of regional economies for policy evolution.
