本研究は、太平洋戦争とその敗戦が戦後の日本社会およびアジア太平洋地域の形成に与えた影響における「負」の側面と、忌まわしい記憶として現在も残る戦争の記憶とを一括して「負」の遺産と捉え、調査研究することを目的としている。
この目的のため、太平洋戦争時における日本国内および旧植民地、および中国大陸、太平洋諸地域など関連地域に関する調査を実施し、戦争に関する関連研究機関との協力関係の構築、図書館、博物館など資料の所在確認と基礎的データの収集に努めた。
本研究の成果は次の三つの点にある。
1戦後の日本社会の変容と太平洋戦争との関係-戦争が戦後の日本社会にいかなる影響を与えたのかという点に関して、空間利用という観点から分析した。具体的には、旧軍用地や戦争被害に遭った地域などがいかに変容したか、それが戦後日本の社会の構造変動にいかなる影響を及ぼしたかを考察した。このアプローチは、日本のみならず、太平洋戦争や第二次世界大戦に関係した地域,国家全体にも応用可能である。
2戦争に関連した地域と観光開発-1のアプローチから、かつて戦場であった太平洋の地域を捉えると、その一部が、観光地になっていることが明らかとなった。かつての戦場は、いまや観光開発の対象であり、またグアムやサイパン、パラオのように、観光地としてしか認識されていない地域も存在する点に十分に留意する必要がある。
3戦争が生み出した文化-太平洋戦争開戦から一年は、日本軍が勝利を収めていた。したがって、1942年の段階では、日本は一種の沸騰状態にあった。こうしたなか、思想や文化の領域においても,アメリカに対する勝利の事実抜きにしては、考えられなかったような新たな試みが生まれる。
The purpose of this study is to examine the negative heritage, which include negative aspects of the influence that the Pacific War and the defeat of Japan exert on the formation of Japanese society and Asia-Pacific region of postwar and, present memories of war as a detestable one.
For this purpose, we conducted research on areas related to the Pacific War not only in Japan, but also in former Japanese colony, China, and Asia-Pacific region. We constructed cooperative relations with research institutes, libraries and museums concerned, to collect data. Here are three principal results.
1 The relation between the Pacific War and the change of Japanese society of the postwar period
The influence that the war exerted on Japanese society of the postwar period was analyzed from the viewpoint of space use. In particular, we considered how former military reservations and regions damaged by the war were transformed, and how they affected structural change of Japanese society of the postwar period. This approach can be applied to not only Japan but also to the entire region and the nation involved in the Pacific War.
2 The region involved in the Pacific War and tourism development
By approach1, it was clarified that the part of the former battlefield in the pacific region has been transformed into the tourist resort. It is necessary to pay attention to the reality that regions like Guam, Saipan and Palau are, now, recognized only as tourist resorts and the social change of these societies after the Pacific War is almost completely ignored.
3 The Culture produced by the war
In the beginning of the Pacific War, Japan was gaining an advantage over the U.S.A. Japan was, therefore, into effervescence. The feeling of superiority was giving place to the creation even in the domain of philosophy and culture.
