Outline of Final Research Achievements

We supported mainly young researchers’ travel expenses for collaboration research with foreign laboratories and presentation of their results overseas. In addition, an international workshop was held in Kyoto from March 19 to 23, 2018, in order to deepen exchanges between young domestic researchers and top-class young researchers from overseas. Ten young top researchers from overseas were invited, and many young researchers from Japan participated. A total of 88 people participated, including senior researchers, and there were lively question-and-answer sessions, discussions, and joint research meetings. An international symposium was held at Kyoto University on March 15-17, 2023. We invited eight well-known researchers from abroad, and many researchers from within the field participated, making for meaningful research exchanges.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

発生時計について多くの点が不明であったが、分節時計について研究が大いに進んだ。マウスの分節周期は約2時間なのに対してヒトは約5時間であることを発見し、その種差の分子機構を明らかにするとともに、神経発生過程の進行速度の種差も同じ機構によることを示した。これら一連の成果は、一般にも大きなインパクトを与え、Nature誌等で解説されるとともに、国内外の多くのマスコミでも報道された。発生過程はドミノ式に進行すると考えられていたが、上記のように厳密に時間を測る発生時計の実体が示され、さらに発生時計が場と連携する過程が明らかになった。神経科学や発生生物学に「革新的・創造的な学術研究の発展」をもたらした。
