Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this project was to promote research in this area supporting each research group with information on the comprehensive plan of the area and consolidating information on research plans, progress, and results. Various activities for the appropriate implementation of the overall plan of the area were promoted including international activities.
During the research period, 8 open symposia, 10 general meetings, 8 joint research promotion meetings, and 3 international symposia were held. In the Corona disaster, hybrid meetings were held to enable in-depth face-to-face discussions and online information exchange. In addition, public relations were actively promoted through SNS live broadcasts of open symposia and distribution of videos (Japanese and English versions) regarding area studies and achievements. The concept paper of soft crystals was published in 2019 and the special issue of review papers was published in 2022.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究領域では、規則正しい結晶構造・周期構造を維持したまま、外部刺激によってその構造や特性が劇的に変化し、独特の性質や光機能を示す物質群を「ソフトクリスタル」と呼び、新しい学術領域として、その転移現象や応答機構についての学理解明と機能導出に成功した。総括班では概念や方向性を示しながら領域を先導し、共同研究を促すことでの研究を推進した。得られた成果から、これまで個別に見出されていた現象や物質が整理され、体系的な理解を示すことができたことは学術的に高い意義を持つ。また、光機能を中心に種々の機能導出にも成功した。今後さらなる研究の展開により、精密材料としてソフトクリスタルの利用が期待される。
