| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project served as a hub interrelating the four research themes (A01 "Prelude to the urban culture"; A02 "Urban landscape and structure of the ancient West-Asian cities"; B01 "Natural environment and sources in West Asia"; C01 "West-Asian cities from the medieval to modern ages"). It supported the implementation of total 118 workshops organized by six research platforms of different disciplines, run 16 study meetings where all the research platforms were involved, and held an international symposium of three days in June 2023. Thus, it directed the study of "the essence of urban civilization" activating the discussion by all the project members and collaborators.
Moreover, it edited and published five volumes of annual reports of the studies made in and by the entire area research.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
「都市とは何か」という問題を、最古の都市化が発生した西アジア地域に焦点をあて、先史時代から現在までの長射程で、多様な視点から考察した。本研究の多分野協働による長射程の複眼的都市研究は、特定分野からの一面的なアプローチにより分野優先的・ドグマ的な都市の定義を捻出することに満足することなく、古代から現代まであまたある都市を構成する建築学的・社会的特徴を比較格子の中に捉え、その多様な形態とその背景となる自然・歴史・政治・宗教・社会を分析し、都市の生成・変容・没落のパターンを把握することこそが、「都市の本質」を理解する正しい方法であることを明示した。
