Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this field, we fuse the seeds of emerging academics aiming for "softness" and bring together researchers who would never have met. This has created a major academic trend based on a value system that is the exact opposite of conventional science and technology, and has pioneered the academic field of soft robotics, which is based on "softness.
Specifically, in addition to mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and information science, which have been the core of conventional robotics, we have strongly involved material science and biology to realize various elemental technologies for soft robots, and have realized soft robots based on these technologies. In addition, he has created a new academic trend in the form of soft robotics, which can be said to be the opposite of conventional values.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

有史以来,科学技術はひたすら「パワー」と「確実性」を追い求めてきたとは言えないだろうか.確実な動作を求めて機械も材料も「かたさ」を追求してきた.一方,近年,機械・電子,情報処理,材料科学,等,複数の異なった分野で,生体システムが持つ「やわらかさ」を指向する新興学術が同時多発的に勃興してきた.これは偶然ではない.生体・人間中心へ傾向する科学技術の大きな流れが背景にあると我々は捉えた.本領域では従来の科学技術とは真逆とも言える価値観に立脚した大きな学術の潮流を創りだし,「やわらかさ」に立脚する学術領域「ソフトロボット学」の第一歩を切り拓いた.
