Outline of Research at the Start

ハイパーマテリアルとは、準結晶や近似結晶など、補空間を含む高次元空間で統一的に記述される物質群をさす。ハイパーマテリアルはこれまで金属分野にとどまっていたが、本領域は、金属分野の枠を超えて、半導体分野、セラミックス分野、ポリマー分野など広く物質科学全体に波及効果をもたらすものである。このために、データ科学とハイパーマテリアルの学融合を実現し新規ハイパーマテリアルの合成を加速する仕組みをつくるとともに、班内・班間留学や研究者循環システムを通じて領域内の有機的な連携を促進し、協働して領域の目的の実現にあたる。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The discovery of quasicrystals, which exhibit symmetries impossible in periodic crystals, has overturned the long-standing definition of crystals that humanity has embraced for centuries, while also revealing the existence of materials that cannot be understood within ordinary real space. This project redefined quasicrystals and their approximants under the unified concept of "hypermaterials," aiming to establish a new scientific framework based on the notion of complementary space. Through the synthesis of diverse materials, such as magnetic, semiconducting, oxide, polymeric, quantum critical, strongly correlated, and superconducting systems, and the investigation of their unique physical properties, the project uncovered hidden orders by interpreting complex phenomena through the lens of complementary space. In doing so, it has laid the foundation for a new interdisciplinary field of materials science: the science of hypermaterials.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究領域により、同一の高次元周期構造の実空間への射影によって得られる準結晶と近似結晶を統一した上位概念としての「ハイパーマテリアル」が国内外にひろく認知され、我々の物質観において両者が一つの物質群として統一的に理解されるようになったことの意義は大きい。また、準結晶分野とデータ科学分野との学融合が実現され、世界初のハイパーマテリアル・インフォマティクスが創成され、ハイパーマテリアル組成を予測する機械学習モデルとハイパーマテリアル・データベース(HYPOD)も構築された。これらはいずれも、準結晶分野・データ科学分野への著しい貢献であるばかりでなく、物性科学における貴重な学術資産となった。
