Outline of Research at the Start

これまで看過されてきた超硫黄分子の化学的・物理的な特性を理解し、その生物学的機能と代謝制御メカニズムを解明することにより、全く新規の硫黄生命科学を確立し、物理化学・生物学の幅広い異分野融合と革新的学術領域の創成を実現することを目標として、領域研究が円滑に実施できるよう、そして、多くの優れた成果が得られるよう、領域メンバーの協力体制の強化、国際的な枠組みの構築、技術支援とデータ共用化体制の構築を行う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2023年9月16-18日に、第3回の領域会議と、第4回の総括班会議を熊本の阿蘇で実施した。2日半に渡りリトリート形式で実施し、計画研究に参加するポスドクや大学院生による若手セッションを設定して、若手研究者たちによる活発な議論が見られた。また、この若手セッションでは、国際化の基本である英語でのプレゼンテーションを採用し、英語での議論のトレーニングの場とすることができた。さらに、寝食を共にすることで濃厚な研究交流が実現し、公募研究の代表者も含めた領域内の共同研究が多数成立した。
バーチャルラボの実現のため、毎月1度、オンラインにより、すべての計画研究代表者と分担者、公募研究代表者、それぞれの研究室メンバーが参加する「領域プログレス」を継続して実施している。ここでも、代表者に代えてそれぞれの研究室の若手研究者による発表を促した。研究室ごとの最新の実験結果を領域でシェアして、結果の解釈の議論、新たな実験の提案など、活発な意見交換がなされている。
2024年3月には、本領域を密接に関連する国際先導研究の採択を受けたキックオフシンポジウムとして、G-ReXS2024を仙台の東北大学星陵キャンパスで開催し、レドックス生物学領域の第一線で活躍している20名を超える研究者を世界各地から招聘し、領域に参加する若手研究者との交流を図った。全体では160名を超える参加者となった。本領域での研究成果を紹介し、我が国における硫黄生物学研究の先駆性をレドックス生物学の世界のリーダーたちにアピールすることができた。
若手研究者の支援として、超硫黄分子の新しい測定技術を含む技術支援窓口・共同研究マッチング窓口の稼働が開始になり、領域内の共同研究がさらに活発に展開できた。また、アウトリーチ活動として、領域代表が宮崎大学のオープンキャンパス事業で、キャリアパスの紹介と共に硫黄研究の紹介を行った。

Reason

多くのhigh tier journalに領域研究の成果が論文として掲載され始めている。また、月例の領域プログレスでは、毎回100名近くの参加者があり、それぞれの研究室で試行錯誤をしながらすすめている超硫黄の検出や生物学的意義の検討などの情報を共有し、活発な共同研究の推進が可能になっており、領域としての一体感が醸成されている。本領域を密接に関連する国際先導研究の採択に至り、2024年3月の国際会議では、多くの海外研究者との対面での交流ができたことから、実質的な共同研究の打ち合わせが多数展開している。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

領域内の支援システムを活用し、超硫黄検出技術の普及に務める。また、領域内のデータ管理、データシェアリングの体制の稼働を開始する。また、国際先導研究と連携して、若手研究者を含めた国際頭脳循環を活性化させて、次世代の育成を図る。
