Outline of Research at the Start

恒温動物は体温37度前後の狭い体温域から逸脱した状態が続くと全身恒常性破綻により死に至る。しかし一部の哺乳類はこの体温域から大きく逸脱し低体温の「冬眠」と呼ばれ る状態で恒常性を保ち長期生存が可能である。冬眠機構の解明は多分野への展開・波及効果を有するが、多くの技術的困難により長年阻まれてきた。しかし近年、冬眠哺乳類での遺伝子改変や、冬眠様低代謝状態誘導を非冬眠哺乳類に引き起こす神経細胞の同定など、日本発のブレ ークスルーにより、冬眠研究は新たなステージに入りつつある。本領域はこれらブレークスルーを有する研究者が結集し、冬眠の誘導・適応の機構解明と、恒常性維持機構の新知見導出を狙う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

哺乳類の冬眠・休眠は、大幅な代謝抑制とそれに伴う極端な体温低下を伴うため、多様な生命機能の劇的な調節を必要とする。その全体の理解には、中枢神経系による制御や全身臓器連関などの、包括的かつ幅広い研究が必要である。本領域では3つの研究項目、A01) 冬眠を支える分子・神経基盤、A02) 冬眠が引き起こす生体応答、A03) 冬眠研究の要素技術を立て、冬眠・休眠制御の本質的理解のために、分子・細胞・組織・臓器・個体の全階層横断的な解析を遂行する。こうした多分野・多階層を専門とする研究者が一丸となって、冬眠休眠の大きな謎に挑む本領域のような試みは世界的にも類がなく、非常に画期的・革新的かつ強力なチーム編成である。ここに公募班を加えたメンバーからなる研究班を加えることで、領域全体で挑戦的・融合的な研究を推進するひとつのバーチャル「冬眠生物学研究所」と言える体制を構築する。そのための研究項目間及び計画研究間の有機的連携と情報の共有を促進することで推進することが総括班の目的である。初年度は計画班メンバー内での交流をより推進した。具体的には、キックオフシンポジウム開催・領域班会議開催・国際冬眠ワークショップへの若手会議参加支援・国内学会での国際シンポジウム企画と海外研究者招聘等を行うとともに、冬眠動物飼育チャンバーの整備、情報解析共同研究の推進などの施策とともに、アウトリート活動も積極的に行い、冬眠生物学研究の推進と普及に努めた。

Reason

初年度は領域内の高い心理的安全性の確保のため、計画班メンバー内での交流をより推進した。具体的には、領域内slackによるすみやかな情報共有および共同研究の推進、キックオフシンポジウム開催、若手を交えた対面での領域会議開催、である。これにより構成員間の人と人の良好な繋がりを形成し、お互いの長所を活かした共同研究をさらに加速させる体制を構築した。また、これから発展期・成熟期を迎える冬眠生物学の長期発展のためには、大学院生・若手・女性研究者の登用・育成も欠かせない。初年度はアラスカで開催された国際冬眠ワークショップに領域から8名を派遣し、旅費支援を行なった。また日本分子生物学会の企画シンポジウムにおいて海外の冬眠研究者2名を招聘し国際シンポジウムを行なった。また冬眠飼育系導入支援として、恒温明暗調節機能付きチャンバーを複数台購入し、必要な班員に貸与することで迅速かつ効率の良い冬眠誘導系セットアップに努めた。また遺伝子改変動物作成支援・神経科学的解析支援・トランスオミクス解析支援のための足場構築を行なった。一般向けの冬眠生物学宣伝活動の一環として、国立科学博物館が発行する科学雑誌Milsilにおいて冬眠特集記事を刊行した。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

公募班が加わる2年目は、さらなる領域の発展のため、まずは領域内メンバーの相互交流を促しお互いの研究を理解することで、心理的安全性の担保に努める。そのために対面の領域会議を7月に神戸にて2泊3日形式で開催する。あらたに冬眠動物飼育系を導入する研究者に冬眠誘導飼育系構築支援を行う。また領域研究の宣伝とさらなる分野外メンバーとの交流のため、日本時間生物学会および日本生理学会にて共催シンポジウム企画を行う。海外演者も招聘することで、国外への宣伝も行う。そのほか、アウトリーチ活動にも引き続き努める。
