Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Physiological experiments were conducted to understand how neural representation in the cerebral cortex related to Shitsukan (material perception) is acquired and how it is utilized for behavior. It was found that neural representation of various materials is formed in the inferior temporal cortex through visuo-haptic experience, and that neural activities in this area is related to the discrimination in the material perception. A theoretical analysis has succeeded in construction of 3D shape from 2D images of glossy objects. Psychophysical studies have shown that emotional evaluation of material images is performed rapidly based on a small number of visual features, suggesting the presence of shortcut in the neural processes in material perception. This hypothesis was supported by a physiological experiment measuring EEG.
