Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this project, we elucidated sequences of pottery and jade articles based on their typological classification and established the chronology of the Neolithic period. Study on pottery showed that consumed food changed from rice porridge in the Hemudu Culture to steamed rice in the Liangzhu Culture, referring to ethnoarcheology and phospholipid analyses. Study on stone tools considered as tillage tools or harvest tools showed their function from the analyses of use traces and experimental archaeology. Study on jade articles showed that diffusion of Liangzhu Jade articles over a wide region triggered the prosperity of local cultures along the Yellow River. Analyses on lacquerware showed the ancient technique of lacquer coating and tree species used for the bodies. Finally, study of archeological sites revealed the structure of the Liangzhu Site Complex and the nearby hydraulic system and deepened our understanding of urbanism and emergent rice civilization in that site complex.
