Outline of Final Research Achievements

I have previously analyzed the centromere, which is formed at a particular region on a chromosome and is essential for chromosome segregation through binding to spindle microtubules during mitosis. In this research project, we called mechanisms, by which a chromosome is harmonized by various chromosome functions, as “Chromosome OS” and tried to clarify the Chromosome OS in collaboration with other members of this project. I performed various and comprehensive collaborative studies and understood a part of the principle of chromosome organization through the centromere.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

染色体は、生命の設計図であり、これが安定に次世代の細胞に受け継がれることは、生命の維持にとって必須である。染色体の分配不全は、がんを始めとする各種疾患の原因となるために、染色体の分配機構を解明することは、将来の医学応用に結びつく社会的意義の深い研究となる。本研究は、染色体分配を染色体構築や複製といった総合的な側面を含めて研究しており、従来にない視点をもった学問的にも意義深い研究となっている。
