Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Since the early 2000s, the understanding of slow earthquakes has rapidly progressed. To grasp the overall picture, Group A01 has utilized new observations and data analysis techniques to clarify the occurrence and interaction among low-frequency tremor, very low-frequency earthquakes (VLFEs), and slow slip events (SSEs), as well as their relationship to mega earthquakes. Advances have highlighted the heterogeneities in the spatial and temporal distributions of slow earthquakes. Such distribution may be used as an indicator of heterogeneous structures at the plate boundaries and the imminence of future mega earthquakes.
