Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Three dimensional structures of seismic velocity and electric resistivity around the Bungo Channel region, where various types of slow earthquakes have been observed, were obtained through integrated analyses of seismic and electromagnetic observation and surveys over the onshore and offshore regions. These structures are mutually consistent in that they show large amount of fluid around the activity of both deep and shallow tectonic tremors under the onshore and offshore regions, respectively. Under eastern Shikoku, it has been shown that a subducting seamount determines the up-dip limit of the deep tectonic tremor activity. In the central part of the Nankai Trough off the Kii Peninsula, offshore continuous seismic monitoring revealed spatiotemporal changes of fluid distribution within the subsurface structure along the slow slip event cycle.
