Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We investigated the processes and mechanisms responsible for slow earthquakes using geological and experimental methods. As a result, we clarified that low-frequency earthquakes and tremor are a swarming phenomenon linked by multiple shear and tensile failures under high fluid pressure in quartz-filled shear and extension veins. We also derived the materials, frictional properties, and viscous shear mechanisms that can lead to slow slip events, and found that dehydration of hydrous minerals and chemical reactions between adjacent rocks play an important role in the generation of slow slip at elevated slip rates.
