Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we developed a maze in which the components of the maze including runways, sensors, movable walls, feeders, and treadmills, can be flexibly reconfigured. In addition, we constructed a logger system that can wirelessly record neuronal activities even outside the laboratory. Using these tools, we have advanced the understanding of spatial navigation in rodents and discovered grid cells in the medial pallium of Streaked shearwaters. Moreover, we discovered head direction cells in the telencephalon of salmonids (trout). We contributed to the development of DeepHL, an animal trajectory analysis method, and were able to discover those characteristic behaviors, which can identify movement disorders, appear in the maximum distance traveled at a certain time. These results have facilitated the understanding of navigation in the research field of Systems Science of Bionavigation.
