Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have clarified the decadal variabilities of the Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) in East Antarctica, by collaboration of five Japanese research vessels in the Southern Ocean for the first time. We have revealed that the freshening trend of the AABW has reversed broadly in the late 2010s after the continuous freshening of the AABW for the previous 30 years. We assume that this is caused by the variability of the glacier melt in the Ross Sea. We have elucidated the circulation time scale and material cycle associated with the Cape Darnley Bottom Water. We have conducted intensive observation on glacier-ocean interaction off Shirase Glacier and Totten Glacier, revealing the processes of the basal melting by warmer water intruding from offshore.
