Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research project, we aimed at revealing the universality and diversity of face recognition by conducting face recognition experiments in diverse regions such as Asia and Africa through field experiments. The results have suggested that there was regional diversity in the individuals' style of face recognition, not just in recognition of facial expression. More specifically, the schematic representation of a face as eyes and mouth (∵) cannot be considered as human universal. Furthermore, the field experiments conducted on the basis of interdisciplinary collaboration between anthropologists, field workers, and experimental psychologists, emphasized the contextual-loadness in the experiments of face studies, which had been overlooked in laboratory experiments.
