Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We studied the evolutionary origins of the human language faculty as one of the most important factors making humans unique among all animals. The focus of our investigation was on two features of human language: hierarchy and intention sharing. In linguistic communication, a speaker's thought to be communicated is often hierarchically structured; however, it is linearized in her utterances, from which a listener reconstructs the original hierarchical structure (hierarchy). This process fundamentally depends on the cooperation of the two parties to share the meanings behind the utterances (intention sharing). Taking a variety of approaches, including physical anthropology, archaeology, primatology, comparative cognitive science, and evolutionary theory, our research provided a series of implications about the historical (when did the language faculty emerge?) and ecological (why did it emerge?) questions on the evolutionary origins of the human language faculty.
