Outline of Final Research Achievements

Biological systems flexibly change their phenotypes in response to environmental changes. In order to quantitatively analyze the characteristics of adaptive evolution of the phenotype, we carried out a systematic evolution experiment of Escherichia coli under various environments and analyzed the phenotypic and genotypic changes of the evolved strain. The results indicate that the possible phenotypic changes in E. coli are restricted to a low-dimension phenotype space. Furthermore, the magnitude of the phenotypic changes correlates with the magnitude of the phenotypic fluctuations independent of the genotype changes. These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and suggest that evolution can be predicted and controlled in short generations.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

今回の研究では、適応進化の過程が比較的少数の変数によって記述可能であることを示している。このことは、その適切な少数自由度を抽出することにより、進化の軌跡を予測したり制御したりすることが可能であることを示唆している。今回の研究を基にしたさらなる研究開発により、この進化の予測と制御を可能となれば、病原菌の薬剤耐性能の獲得を抑制する、微生物による有用物質の生産性を向上させるなど、医学・薬学・工学の分野に貢献をすることが期待できる。
