Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We studied the molecular mechanisms of photosynthetic water oxidation and electron-proton transfer in photosystem II (PSII), using spectroscopic analyses, mainly infrared spectroscopy, in combination with site-directed mutagenesis of cyanobacteria. As for the water oxidation mechanism, we obtained important information about the processes of proton and water transfer and the pathways in the proteins. In addition, we clarified the mechanism of photo-assembly of the Mn4CaO5 cluster, the catalytic site of water oxidation in PSII. Furthermore, we clarified the regulatory mechanism of the redox potentials of the iron-quinone electron acceptor, the charge distribution and the mechanism of the primary charge separation of the reaction center chlorophylls, and the role of the axial ligands of Cytb559 in the secondary electron transfer related to the photoprotection of PSII.
