Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have investigated the mechanism of key transcription factors that regulate nodule formation in legumes and gemma cup formation in liverworts, focusing neogenesis of stem cells from differentiated cells, which is typical in plants. As a result, we have identified transcription factors crucial for development in a pair of distinct organs, such as lateral roots and nodules, or lateral shoots and gemma cups. Our findings indicate that co-option of a key transcription factor is important for the gain of novel organs during the evolution of plant morphology.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

マメ科植物は根粒菌と細胞内共生することで大気中の窒素を利用し、貧栄養土壌で生育できる。また、維管束植物は腋芽を発生させることで地上部のバイオマスを格段に増大させ、環境に適応した生態系の根幹を形作る。植物の生存戦略に重要な器官の発生を制御する鍵因子を分子遺伝学的に明らかにし、その進化メカニズムを紐解いたことにより、特定の因子をターゲットにしたデザイン育種が可能となり、持続可能な開発目標に貢献できる。
