Outline of Final Research Achievements

Analysis of rice and Arabidopsis mutants suggested the presence of an unknown small signaling molecule that regulates the timing of leaf production. The Arabidopsis mutant was also studied as mutants with reduced organ size. In this study, we established an experimental system to elucidate the identity of this signaling molecule. In addition, a study using the Physcomitrium patens moss suggested that changes in the distribution and/or amount of the plant hormones auxin and cytokinin are involved in the action of this signaling molecule.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では、陸上植物において共通して存在することが示唆されている未知の低分子シグナル分子を植物抽出物中から追跡する手法を確立した。今後、同手法を用いてさらに精製を進めることにより、目的物質の同定が期待される。当シグナル分子は器官サイズに影響を与えるため、農業において重要な役割を果たすと考えられ、有用植物の生産性の増大に貢献することが期待される。
