| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The comprehensive collection and analysis of a wide range of data from the Neolithic period in southwestern Asia revealed that a significant amount of social energy was dedicated to ritual activities, as evidenced by the construction of large communal buildings and the proliferation of symbolism in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period. This was accompanied by the emergence of specialized prestige goods production, the establishment of long-distance trade networks, and the evolution of goods management, all of which contributed to social complexities that foreshadowed the urbanization of the following periods. However, a shift occurred in the late Pre-Pottery Neolithic, with the establishment of farming societies. This transition was marked by the disappearance of communal buildings and a decline in specialized production.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
西アジア新石器時代の初頭に、儀礼祭祀と深く関係する大型の公共建造物が造営され、萌芽的な工芸の専業化や長距離交易網の発達などが明らかになったことで、その時代に都市的様相を先取りするような社会の複雑化の動きがあったことが確実となった。しかも、その社会ではまだ農耕牧畜による食糧生産が始まっていなかったことも確認され、食糧生産の開始が社会を大きく変容させたとする従来の考えではうまく説明できないことや農耕社会の成立後に社会の複雑化が一旦後退してしまうことが明らかになったことで、社会の複雑化を進展させる要因について経済だけでなく、イデオロギーや社会組織の面にも光を当てる必要があることを示すことができた。
