| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We conducted the research with the theme of“what is an Ancient Egyptian city?” Till then the cities belonging to Ancient Western Asian area (Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Anatolia, Ancient Palestine) was considered to be the template of“the Ancient City.”
However, compared to such cities, the Ancient Egyptian cities are greatly different. As a result, in the past, it was said that “Egypt was a civilization without cities.” We revealed the characteristic features of Ancient Egyptian cities different from Ancient Western Asia by analyzing their landscape and the structure.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
古代エジプトの都市をその「景観」と「構造」を中心として総合的に研究したことは、これまでほとんどなかった。従来は「都市」が誕生した古代西アジア地域の都市が、都市の基本を満たしているとされていた。そのため、古代エジプトの都市は、古代西アジアの都市と異質であると思われ、その本質的な特徴が明らかにされていなかった。
古代エジプトの都市は、古代西アジアの都市とは全く異なった特徴を有していることを明らかにしたことは、学術的にも意義あることである。古代の西アジアとエジプトを「古代オリエント」という地域名で扱うことも注意が必要であることは社会的な意義があると言えよう。
