Outline of Final Research Achievements

Many high-entropy alloys are known to exhibit peculiar mechanical properties which conventional alloys cannot achieve. In the planned research, atomic structure, atomic diffusion and dislocations that carry plastic flow in high-entropy alloys were investigated down to an atomistic level by effective combinations of some advanced characterization methods such as nano-mechanical testing, scanning transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction and three-dimensional atom-probe, and factors controlling the peculiar mechanical properties based on the high-entropy effects of high-entropy alloys, high-entropy glasses and high-entropy ceramics were elucidated in order to reveal the essence of these high-entropy materials.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

(1) ハイエントロピー合金の異常に高い低温降伏強度,(2)異常に高い低温引張延性・靭性と低温域における強度と延性の正の相関,(3)高温における異常に高い降伏強度,(4)強度の特異な結晶粒径依存性,(5)原子拡散に関連した高温クリープ強度について重点的に実験研究を行い,2元系や3元系の通常の合金には現れない特異な力学特性の発現メカニズム・ハイエントロピー効果の本質を根源的に解明し,卓越した研究成果を広く社会に発信できた学術的意義は非常に高い.これらの研究成果を,「強くてねばい」夢の革新的構造材料を幅広い材料系で実現するための指針提案に繋げる事ができ,社会実装の観点からもその社会的意義も高い.
