Outline of Final Research Achievements |
As a new approach to verify quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects under strong electric fields, we aimed for high-precision measurements of muonic characteristic X-rays emitted from muonic atoms isolated in a vacuum. Using slow negative muons supplied at J-PARC and superconducting TES-type X-ray calorimeters, we have successfully observed the QED effect appearing in the energy levels of the muonic X-rays emitted from muonic Ne atoms. High-precision measurements of emitted electronic characteristic X-rays have also demonstrated their applicability to studying dynamics in the femtosecond time-domain and spectroscopy of exotic few-quantum many-body systems composed of bound electrons, muons, and nuclei. In addition, we succeeded for the first time in directly observing muon molecules via vibrational structures appearing in muonic X-rays.
