Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this research is to realize growing biosoft robots by using cells as materials. In our five-year effort, we have promoted the development of cyborgs, cell tactile sensors, and muscle cell robots. In addition, as a control technology, we promoted the development of a multi-joint modular soft robot arm and 3D shape measurement using a monocular camera. We also worked on collaborative research within the research area. We have developed a self-repairing cell tactile sensor using nanosheet electrodes. By co-culturing brain organoids and myocyte actuators, we created myocyte robots controlled by neurons. As a result, we have achieved the construction of a growing body that contributes to the flexible body design theory, which is the purpose of the A01 group.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

近年の再生医療技術またiPS細胞関連技術の驚異的な発展により、単純な生体組織のみならず一部の生体器官の再建までもが、可能となりつつある。現段階では、これらの技術は、特定の病態を再現する等の病理学的な利用に限定されたものである。当該研究の意義は、機械と生体を接続して制御する新しいシステム学へ発展させるために、細胞をソフトでインテリジェントな部品として直接組みこんだサイボーグを開発したことにある。
細胞の機械刺激応答を活用することによって、生体をロボットデバイスのように操作できる可能性を示した。また、状況に応じて自己改変する能力(成長、複製、修復)を獲得する知的システムが可能であることを示した。
