Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study was to actively integrate flexible sensor technology and physical reservoir computing approaches in order to maximize the information processing capabilities inherent in the dynamics of a soft body. The research was conducted based on the following three axes: computation using soft materials, autonomous behavior control using soft materials, and development of learning methods incorporating soft materials. Systematic research was carried out along these three axes, resulting in the development of numerous new technologies and the discovery of new mathematical principles. Some of these achievements have been published as papers in renowned journals and have also been announced through press releases in various media outlets.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究成果の学術的意義は、ソフトロボットに対する物理リザバー計算の適用手法・適用範囲を大きく変えたことにある。これにはフレキシブルセンサー技術の導入が大きく寄与している。
現在、人とインタラクトする局面や医療において応用できるソフトロボット・ソフトデバイスの開発が世界的に進められている。本研究の成果の社会的意義は、こういったロボット・デバイスの情報処理の様態に関して、新しい手法を開発することで、より効率よく安価に短時間で実装できるアプローチを提示したことにある。これらの手法は、本領域全体の成果物であるソフトロボットの教科書にも収められており、社会的に広く発信されている。
