Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Changes in plant growth in response to nutritional and other environmental conditions are accompanied by changes in plant mechanical properties. In addition, mechanical stimulation of plants causes changes in their growth. We studied this relationship, including the development of a method for measuring root mechanical properties. We developed a method to measure the mechanical properties of plant roots as a whole, and measured the properties of roots grown under different nutritional conditions, and found a correlation between root length and mechanical properties. The genes and phytohormones involved in the phenomenon of nutritropism were also identified. Furthermore, mechanical stimulation of plants was found to promote plant growth, depending on the plant species and types of stimulation. It was found that there is an interrelationship between growth changes and mechanical properties under the environmental conditions tested in this study.
