Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have compiled the Linguistic Atlas of Asia and Africa, with an elaborate chapter on the linguistic features of the Japanese language. For case marking, comparisons were made between Asian and African languages based on extensive geographical research on Japanese dialectology. Endo deciphered the sounds and meaning of the Chinese characters before the 7th century AD in the Japanese Archipelago and Korean Peninsula. Karimata examined the validity of population genetics by studying the building and evolution of the complex vocabulary system of the Ryukyuan language using phylogenetic trees. Kibe investigated areal differences of accent systems and case marking among Japanese dialects. She also presented her study on the reconstruction of the ancient Japanese language. Kazama has published a comprehensive work on Japanese typology, also contributed his findings on the typology of the Altaic type languages.
