Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have developed a detector technology to search for neutrino-less double beta decay(0νββ) beyond the neutrino effective mass region of 100 meV/c2 by using a time projection chamber with xenon gas.
These include an ionizing electron detection plane that can be modularized and enlarged, a signal waveform digitizer, a Cockcroft-Walton circuit and ring-shaped electrodes to generate a drift electric field, a circulation system to purify the gas, and low emission of the detector components.
Incorporating these techniques into a 180-liter gas vessel, we succeeded in obtaining high energy resolution for electrons near the 0νββ energy as well as reconstructing the trajectory.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究によりν無二重ベータ崩壊探索をより高感度で行うための多くの技術を確立することができた。ν無二重ベータ崩壊の探索は、ニュートリノの特異な軽さの起源、そして宇宙においてなぜ反物質が消えて物質だけが残ったのかという、世界=宇宙の起源を知りたいという人類の根源的な知的要求に答える上で重要な課題である。
