Roots of vascular plants plasticly construct root system structure through lateral root development in response to endogenous and exogenous factors. In this study, developmental studies centered on imaging analysis using wild-type, various mutants, and transformants of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana were conducted to elucidate the control mechanisms of spatiotemporal periodicity of lateral root development and the regulatory mechanisms that generate such plasticity. We identified several key factors involved in the mechanisms regulating the spatiotemporal periodicity and plasticity of lateral root development and elucidated their roles.
