海洋前線帯とそれに伴う海洋渦の理解を更に進めるため、1.黒潮・親潮合流域やその下流域における表層湧昇及び海洋前線帯の形成機構、2.海洋渦やサブメソスケールの微細現象の形成過程、3.微細現象を含む海洋前線帯の変動に対する、生物生産や水塊、物質循環の応答、4.黒潮、黒潮続流、親潮等やそれらに伴う海洋渦活動の経年変動の予測可能性と変動機構、5.黒潮・親潮続流等の海洋前線変動への大気循環応答と、それがさらに再強制する大気海洋海氷結合系変動が十年規模変動、及びその予測可能性に果たす役割、6.海洋塩分の時空間分布に対する大気海洋相互作用に伴う降水の役割、以上の6サブテーマを緊密に連携して推進する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
After elucidating how atmospheric variability can provide potential predictability of variability in the ocean frontal zone and 100 km-scale ocean eddy variations associated with strong ocean currents such as the Kuroshio and the Gulf Stream up to several years ahead, we developed a prediction system for ocean currents and ocean eddy variations. The system was shown to be capable of predicting the Kuroshio and the Gulf Stream and the activity of the ocean eddies downstream of each current with significant skills with lead time of up to 1-2 years. Furthermore, as a longer-term change, it is shown that the Kuroshio Extension has moved about 200 km northward over the past 29 years, based on satellite observation. In addition, we have shown that such variability in ocean currents affects the surrounding marine ecosystem and that taking into account the interaction between the oceans and typhoons can improve the accuracy of typhoon intensity forecasts.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
海洋中規模渦や強い海流を解像した準全球の60年に及ぶ経年変動シミュレーション、海洋観測を同化した30年に及ぶ再解析データと、この再解析データを初期値とした海洋渦を解像する3年先までの準全球海洋予測システムの構築は、海洋渦を解像する従来のデータや予測の規模（領域～海盆規模、半年程度）から大きく進展した。上記データは既に公開されており海洋学、気候学に大きく貢献しつつある。一方、近年日本周辺では全海洋の2倍程度の速さで長期的な高温化が進んでおり、その影響が社会的にも強く懸念されている。本研究課題で推進した日本周辺の海洋変動の理解は、その原因を考えて行く上での基盤となっていくと考えられる。
