Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Contributions to weather and climate from the midlatitude and subtropical oceans have been overlooked, but the present study has revealed their critical importance. Midlatitude ocean fronts are found to anchor storm-tracks by energizing migratory cyclones and anticyclones and thereby enhance their hemispheric variability as well as upward propagation of gravity waves that act to decelerate strong westerlies around the subpolar stratopause. Rapid oceanic warming around Japan, including recent marine heatwaves, is found to influence torrential rain events and the unprecedented hot summers. Radiative cooling of the eastern subtropical oceans by highly reflective low-level clouds is found to be critical for the summertime development of the subtropical highs. Midlatitude air-sea heat exchanges are also found to sustain dominant tropospheric variability in the North Pacific and Atlantic by reducing thermal damping.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
