Outline of Research at the Start

日本の南岸に沿って流れる黒潮は,膨大な熱を熱帯から運びそれを日本付近で大気に放出する.この熱放出があることによって,中緯度大気が様々な影響を受けることが,最近十年間の高解像度観測データ解析および数値モデル実験で報告されてきた.しかし,この中緯度海洋が大気に及ぼす影響が異なる数値モデルでも同じように再現されるのか,またこの作用が将来の温暖化においてどのような役割を果たすのかは不明であった.そこで本研究では,これらの問題を解決することを目的として,多数の気候モデル,特に高解像度モデルデータの収集と解析を行う.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study revealed several important aspects of climate change impacts. First, atmospheric rivers are projected to intensify under global warming, increasing the likelihood of extreme precipitation events, potentially reaching magnitudes not observed in the pre-warming climate. Around Japan, the frequency of bomb cyclones is expected to decrease, and the formation of subtropical mode water is projected to decline. On the other hand, the recent trend of tropical cyclones reaching their peak intensity closer to land has been found to result from natural climate variability. Furthermore, the primary driver of the "global boiling" conditions during 2023-2024 was identified to be mainly due to Earth's Energy Imbalance. In addition, a remarkable marine heatwave occurred along the Tokai and Kanto coasts in association with a large meander of the Kuroshio Current. This marine heatwave was also shown to contribute to elevated summer air temperatures in the Kanto and Tokai regions.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、日本周辺で近年観測されている極端な昇温やかつてない黒潮大蛇行の実態・メカニズム・影響を明らかにし、地球温暖化が進行した場合にこの地域における台風、爆弾低気圧、大気の川、極端降水、海洋熱波などがどう変化するかを解明した。さらに、2023ー2024年の地球沸騰の主要因が地球への熱の過剰流入であることを示すなど、全球・大洋規模でも重要な成果を得ており、国際的な学術貢献としても意義が大きい。これらの知見は自然変動との識別や将来の災害リスク評価に資する学術的基盤を提供し、防災や適応政策の立案にも貢献する。
