| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We examined how dopaminergic (DA) and cholinergic (Ach) systems contribute to brain network dynamics. Animal experiments suggested the possibility that the interaction between the midbrain DA and Ach systems enhanced the alpha band (10-12 Hz), the fundamental frequency of brain activity, to synchronize brain circuit dynamics to its frequency. Clinical studies demonstrated that brain network connectivity dynamics become sparse in dementia with Lewy bodies and Alzheimer's disease, in which the ACh system is highly impaired. The impairment of the DA system, which acts on the cerebral hemispheres and brainstem, may be involved in the posture and gait disorders of Parkinson's disease. These results suggest that the interaction between the DA and Ach systems contributes to the maintenance of brain network dynamics by facilitating reward-oriented plasticity in the cerebral hemispheres and brainstem-spinal cord and that this is disrupted in the above-mentioned degenerative brain disorders.
