| Outline of Research at the Start |
ヨーロッパ社会においてキリスト教の教義に対して「身体的な適応」が進展したとされる9～13世紀前半を対象に、観想的な生活を送る修道院が構築した「典礼空間」の内実と変遷過程を明らかにする。修道規則、証書、書簡、歴史叙述、文学作品、写本彩飾、聖堂装飾をコミュニケーションを促進するためのメディアとしてとらえ直したうえで、①修道院がメディアを生み出した目的とその対象を分析し、②個々のメディアの表現方法や内容が典礼の発展といかに関係していたのかを考察することで「典礼空間」の特質を解明し、③「典礼空間」が社会のキリスト教化と統合に及ぼした影響を明らかにすること、の3点を研究目的とする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project analysed the various media produced by the contemplative monasteries from the 9th to the first half of the 13th century, and attempted to clarify the characteristics of the 'liturgical space' formed by these media. The project conducted joint research by comparing the various texts and images produced by the monks from the three fields of history, art history and literature, and organised symposia and international conference sessions together with other research groups. One of the group's original attempts was the public seminar 'Aquamanile and the Formation of Liturgical Space' (30 October 2021), which examined what kind of values and ways of perceiving the world were brought to religious life by the aquamanile (jug) that prevailed in medieval Europe during the High Middle Ages.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
中世ヨーロッパにおける社会のキリスト教化の過程を理解する上で、本プロジェクトが掲げた「典礼空間」という概念は大変有用であることが明らかとなった。この概念に、歴史学、美術史学、文学という人文学3分野が取り組むことで、従来それぞれのディシプリンによって個々に分析されてきた多種多様なテクストと図像の相互比較が可能となった。アクアマニーレに関する公開セミナーは、今後この「典礼空間」研究をさらに深化させるために重要なモデルケースになるに違いない。
