本研究は中世地域寺社の参詣史について新たな地平を切り開くものである。
まず古文書史料を収集・読解し、地域寺社の構造とその活動の実態を明らかにする。平行して、メディア・リソースとしての古典籍や美術史料を利用し、宗教者の修行と民衆に対する活動、彼らの移動と交流がとりもつ寺社どうしの関係性を明らかにする。こうした史資料収集・読解の作業とともに、いくつかの地域寺社において調査を行い、往時の修法・祭祀のあり方、参詣・巡礼の実態を明らかにしていく。
以上の成果にもとづき、他研究班による成果と比較し、宗教（キリスト教・仏教・神道など）の個別具体性や普遍性について検討していく。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Research was carried out on the history of pilgrimage, pilgrimage and homage to local temples and shrines in medieval Japan, with researchers in the fields of historical documents , literature and art history as contributors. Each member carried out research on the subject, while study groups were held online from time to time. Three plenary sessions were held under the management of the general group, the last of which was an international research meeting. As well as deepening understanding of the subject, exchanges with researchers of Western history were promoted, and it was confirmed that Western and Japanese medieval societies had many points in common in terms of the cult of universal religion and monasticism.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
日本中世の地域寺社をめぐる遊歴・参詣・巡礼について、伊勢参詣・修験道・四国遍路の三点について史料を蓄積し、また活字化することができた。地域寺社の静態についても考察を深めることができ、特にその民衆救済の多様性を確認することができた。さらに総括班のもとで、観想修道会班・托鉢修道会班・イエズス会班とも研究交流を重ねた。その結果、日本中世社会が西洋のそれと宗教の面において多くの共通点をもつこと、しかし両者に相互の影響関係はなく、その共通性は一種の平行進化のようなものであり、社会そのものが同じような発展段階に達していたことの現れであることも確認することができた。
