Outline of Research at the Start

高齢者においては老視や老人性難聴，注意機能低下など知覚・認知レベルでの機能低下は顕著である一方、自動的かつ無意識的な処理などはある程度維持されている。しかし、高齢者で維持されている機能が、必ずしも若年者と同じ心的メカニズムで実現されているわけではない。実際、高齢者は「見る」行為でも別の感覚情報をより多く使って補償しているという報告がある。本研究ではそのような機能の存在とメカニズムを明らかにする。そして、高齢者の知覚・認知の可塑性を最大限に引き出し、よりよい生活を行うための方法を提言する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

高齢者においては、一見すると若年者と同様に維持されているように見える負荷の低い処理、自動的かつ無意識的処理であっても、その背後には衰えた心的機能を補償する別のプロセスが働いている可能性がある。本研究ではそのような機能の存在を確認し、補償される機能と補償されない機能、補償の最適条件や仕組み等を検討することによって、高齢者の知覚・認知の特性を正しく捉えなおし、その可塑性を最大限に引き出す最適な方法を見いだすことを目的としている。特に，日常の基礎をなす知覚情報処理過程である【A】選択的注意、【B】プライミング及び【C】知覚学習の自動的かつ無意識的な側面を主たる対象として検討を行っている。
第4年度である本年度は，視聴覚音声知覚における視覚情報と聴覚情報の自動的統合過程に着目した。Teramoto & Ernst (2023)では，音声知覚において視覚情報が自動的に（本人の視覚刺激に対する自覚なしに）統合されることを示した。ここではその統合過程を若年者と高齢者で比較した。マガーク効果を指標にしたところ，若年者では視覚情報が見えない条件ではマガーク効果は弱いながらも生起することから自動的な過程も視聴覚音声知覚に貢献していることが示唆された。一方，高齢者全体では視覚情報が見えない条件ではマガーク効果が生起しなかった。ただし，ワーキングメモリ成績や処理速度の高い，すなわち，流動性知能の高い高齢者では若年者と同程度のマガーク効果が生起していた。このことは，高齢者では，視聴覚音声知覚において，流動性知能の低下とともに自動的な処理過程も減衰し，それを補うため意識的な処理過程に負荷がかかっている可能性が示唆された。

本年度予定していた自動的かつ無意識的な側面の加齢変化を確認できたことから「おおむね順調に進展している」とした。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

【A】選択的注意、【B】プライミング及び【C】知覚学習のいずれについても自動的かつ無意識的な側面の加齢変化とその変化を補償する条件を引き続き明らかにしていく。また，本年度見出された視聴覚音声知覚における高齢者の自動的な処理過程の低下が流動性知能の低下と関連していたことから，流動性知能を高める訓練の効果も明らかにしていく。さらに，顕著な加齢変化や補償が見出された現象に関しては脳波計測等により神経機序も明らかにしていく。
