Outline of Research at the Start

すばる超広視野多天体分光器Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS)は、広い視野に渡り、約2400個の天体を同時に分光観測ができる極めてユニークな装置である。ダークマターが卓越する天体(例えば矮小銀河)の個々の星のPFS分光観測から、視線速度を測定し、ダークマターの空間分布を高精度に復元し、アクシオンなどのダークマター模型を検証する。本研究グループのリードの下、米国、台湾などの国際共同研究者と協力し、分光器モジュールカメラ、主焦点装置制御・較正システムの開発を行う。また、分光データから物理量を高精度かつローバストに測定するための物理解析パイプラインを開発する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

すばる主焦点広視野カメラHyper Suprime-Cam (HSC)による広天域イメージング観測の約3年間分の大規模データを用い、宇宙の大規模構造による遠方銀河像への重力レンズ歪み効果を測定した。また、このHSC重力レンズ効果の宇宙論統計量を精密に測定し、宇宙の標準理論であるΛCDMモデルの理論予言と比較し、宇宙論パラメータ(宇宙の物理量)を測定した。その結果、現在の宇宙の構造形成の進行度合いを記述する「S8」と呼ばれる物理パラメータについて、すばるHSCが示唆するS8の測定値が、宇宙背景放射衛星のPlanckデータが示唆するS8の値よりも約2σ程度の有意性の不一致を示すことを発見した。このHSCの重力レンズ効果の測定結果、ΛCDMの物理パラメータ、特にS8パラメータの測定結果について、HSC国際プロジェクトとして一連の研究成果を発表できた(Li et al. 2023; Dalal et al 2023; Sugiyama et al 2023; Miyatake et al. 2023)。S8不一致は、CDMを超えるダークマターの性質のためである可能性がある。
すばるPrime Focus Spectrographの開発研究については、プリンストン大学、ジョンズホプキンス大学、国立天文台の研究者との共同研究で、分光器の高精度較正システム、特にメトロロジーカメラシステムの制御システムを開発した。2023年度中には、実際のすばるサイトで試験観測を行うことができ、主焦点面の遠隔自動制御できる各ファイバー(Cobra)を約20μmの精度(空の上では約0.2秒角)で位置制御できることを確認した。PFSのサーベイ・サイエンス設計についても、米国Tufts大学で対面の共同研究会議を開催することができ、有意義な議論を持つことができ た。

Reason

開発中のすばる超広視野多天体分光器Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) を念頭に、ダークマターの探査、ニュートリノ質量の制限を目指した手法の開発を行っている。現存するSDSS分光データを練習データとして用い、SDSSデータと上述のすばるHSCイメージングデータを組み合わせた宇宙論の手法を開発し、また実際のSDSSとHSCデータから得られた宇宙論統計量に適用することができ、ΛCDMの物理パラメータ(S8パラメータ)を数%の精度で測定することに成功した。このように確実に研究成果を論文で発表できており、また並行してPFSの準備研究も進めている。
すばるPFSの装置開発の研究でも、プリンストン大学、ジョンズホプキンス大学、台湾の中央研究院天文及天文物理研究所の研究者と協力して、分光器の高精度較正システムの開発を進めることができた。すばる望遠鏡のトラブルがあり、当初の想定よりは試験観測のデータが取れなかったものの、取得したデータでファイバーの位置制御の較正するソフトウェアが開発し、各ファイバーを天球上で0.2秒角程度まで位置制御できるところまできた。すばるのシーイング(大気揺らぎの影響が)0.6秒角であることから、現時点では十分合格に値する成果と言える。2400本のファイバーも約2分間で位置合わせすることができることも確認しており、これは既に目標値を達成している。
これらの研究成果、また進捗状況により、おおむね順調に進展していると言える。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度は、すばる望遠鏡PFSの試験観測を実行し、そのデータを速やかに解析し、引き続き高精度構成システムの開発、性能評価、また改良の研究を進める。2025年2月からのサイエンス運用を目指し、ハードウェアの整備、データ解析ソフトウェアの開発・改良、また大規模観測を運用するためのソフトウェア、体制を整え、万全の準備を行う。
2025年2月にサイエンス運用が開始した際には、ダークマターが卓越する矮小銀河のメンバー星をPFSで観測し、そのデータを速やかに解析し、ダークマター、特に波の性質を有するダークマター(アクシオンなど)を発見、あるいは制限する研究を行う。国際共同研究を円滑に進めるために、対面およびハイブリッドの共同研究会議を開催し、喫緊の課題、問題を密に議論する場を設ける。
