Outline of Research at the Start

宇宙に大量に存在し、重力によって銀河等の大構造を形づくる暗黒物質の正体については、多くの候補が考えられるが未だ決着がついていない。本変革領域では、様々な手法を駆使してその探求を行なうが、本計画領域では、特にX線領域での分光能力の向上をいかした2つの方法を試みる。一つは、2022年度打ちあげ予定のXRISM衛星搭載のマイクロカロリメータにより、宇宙観測によって暗黒物質起源の放射を探す。もう一つは、暗黒物質候補であるアクシオンが存在する場合、太陽から放射されるアクシオンを新たな手法による地上検出実験である。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In X-ray detection, the energy resolution can be increased by a factor of 20 or more by replacing conventional semiconductor detectors with cryogenic detectors called microcalorimeters. This improves the sensitivity of the emission lines significantly and opens up new methods for dark matter detection. In this study, aiming at the detection of 14.4 keV Solar axion, a prototype superconducting transition-edge calorimeter dedicated to this purpose was built and confirmed its functions. Pilot test measurements were performed and obtained an upper limit on the axion mass, although the sensitivity is inferior to that of previous studies. Fine spectroscopic studies of celestial objects with the XRISM satellite were also initiated.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は,宇宙用に開発が進められてきた新たな放射線検出器の応用例として,ダークマターの検出実験を行ったものであり,検出器の機能向上により新たな学術が生まれる可能性を示すとともに,未解決な課題へのチャレンジでもある。今後この検出器が基礎物理学だけでなく材料科学等にも用いられることで,新たな材料の創出などに役立つことが期待される。
