Outline of Research at the Start

ダークマターは宇宙に存在する物質の8割を占めるが、その正体は不明である。これまでの研究では、WIMPと呼ばれる弱い相互作用を行う重い粒子が最有力候補であったが、長年の探査にも関わらずその検出は成功していない。そこで、近年は全く異なる種類のダークマター探査が注目されている。本研究では、素粒子物理学の標準理論モデルには含まれない、パリティ対称性を破る「アクシオン場」や、スピンを持つベクトル場などに着目し、それらが宇宙マイクロ波背景放射(CMB)の偏光に与える影響を、理論的・観測的に調べる。CMBの偏光に特化するのが本研究の特色である。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

パリティ対称性を破るアクシオン場のようなダークマターが光子と相互作用を行うと、光子の偏光面は回転する。これは「宇宙複屈折効果」と呼ばれている。この効果により宇宙マイクロ波背景放射(CMB)の偏光パターンは変化し、EモードとBモード偏光の相互相関(EB相関)が生じる。これは、パリティ対称性を保存する標準的な宇宙モデルでは得られないため、パリティ対称性を破るダークマター探査を可能にする。前年度までの研究では、CMB観測衛星WMAPとPlanckのデータを用いてEB相関を測定し、パリティ対称性の破れの兆候を3.6シグマの統計的有意差で観測した。本年度は、この信号を理論モデルを用いて説明する際、これまで一般に使われてきたEB相関の理論予言は不十分な近似に基づいていたことを明らかにした。ボルツマン方程式をきちんと解くことで得た正しい理論予言を測定データと比較することで、アクシオン場のモデルを制限した。その結果、測定されたEB相関は素粒子物理学の標準模型の有効理論の枠内では説明できず、標準模型を超える新しい物理が必要であることを示した。

Reason

本計画研究で明らかにしたように、パリティ対称性を破る宇宙複屈折効果が確認されれば、標準的な宇宙モデルを超える新しい物理現象の発見となる。そのような結果は大きなインパクトを持つため、観測と理論の両方を精査し、本計画研究で初めてその兆候が捉えられたEB相関の信号が、本当に宇宙複屈折効果によるものかどうかを判定するのは重要である。WMAPとPlanck衛星から得られた全てのデータを用いるだけでなく、ボルツマン方程式を解いて得た正しい理論予言との比較や、信号を素粒子物理学の標準模型の有効理論で説明できるかどうかの研究は、この研究分野の進展に大きく貢献した。これは予想を大きく上回る成果であり、本計画研究は、当初計画していた以上のペースで進展している。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

これまでの研究では、全天で等方的なCMBの偏光面の回転(等方的複屈折効果)を考慮した。もしアクシオン場がこの信号の起源だとすれば、小さなゆらぎの成分、すなわち非等方的な偏光面の回転も存在する。そこで今後の研究では、本計画研究で開発したボルツマン方程式の手法を、非等方な複屈折の場合に適用する。特にBモード偏光の変化を調べ、南極望遠鏡(SPT)のデータを用いて非等方な複屈折を引き起こすアクシオン場を探索する。これまでの非等方な複屈折の観測では再結合期からの寄与しか考慮されていないので、再電離期からの非等方な複屈折効果を測定し、モデルの制限を行う。さらに可能であれば、現在解析段階にあるアタカマ宇宙論望遠鏡(ACT)の最新データ(DR6)のEB相関を調べる。
