Outline of Research at the Start

本課題では、大型放射光施設SPring-8から得られる非常に輝度の高い、すなわち大強度のX線を用いて我々の生活に欠かせないデバイスを構成する材料、例えばスマートフォンを構成する電池やカバーガラス、カメラのレンズといった材料の開発を加速させるために、その材料における特徴的な原子の並び方を調べる。そして、コンピューターシミュレーションや情報科学を駆使して、その特徴を明らかにし、材料における原子の並び方をコントロールして新しい材料を作ることに挑戦する。その研究計画における構造計測の部分を担当する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have promoted research focusing on the development of techniques for observing “hyperordered structures” using quantum beams in order to measure structures that contribute to the functions of “hyperordered” materials synthesized and developed in our project. We were able to produce many results on the following three subjects.
Subject 1) Development of experimental and analytical techniques for measuring ultra-fine and small amounts of materials with a focus on electron beam, as well as synchrotron radiation X-rays. Subject 2) We have developed a multi-scale element-specific structure measurement technique to precisely observe “hyperordered structures” formed around trace dopants and in small areas in crystalline and amorphous materials. Subject 3) We have tried to capture “hyperordered structures” in various materials under extreme environments such as high temperature and high pressure by combined measurement of atomic-resolution holography and anomalous X-ray scattering.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では結晶と非晶質を扱いその狭間に存在する「超秩序」構造を計測するために、蛍光X線ホログラフィーとX線異常散乱という放射光X線計測を軸として、さらに中性子、電子線と言った量子ビームを横断的に利用する研究を展開した。そして、リングサイズ、リングの形、空隙と言ったトロポロジーに注目した解析を試みた。このアプローチの特徴は結晶学を直接利用しないことである。そして、本手法に基づき、結晶、非晶質材料を構造秩序という視点とは異なった視点で捉え、その概念の確立に成功した。さらに、温度・圧力を駆使してその構造を自在に操り、世界でもっとも構造秩序のある高密度ガラスの合成に成功した。
