| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We developed tools to observe and manipulate the respective activities of nerves, glia, and blood vessels. There have been three major achievements using these tools: the first was the discovery of how neural and glial activity regulate blood flow, in particular the entrainment of whole-brain vasomotion. The second achievement was the development of the technology to manipulate blood flow through optogenetics. This technology was used to elucidate the causal relationship between ischemia and hearing loss. The third achievement was the development of a system to monitor intracellular ATP and pyruvate. This led to the discovery of a case in which astrocytes control neuronal activity.
