| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
A wide variety of proteins support our life by performing diverse physiological functions. Recently, a unique class of proteins, called regulatory nascent chains, has been discovered. These proteins act during their own synthesis by inhibiting the activity of the ribosome, the protein synthesis machinery. In this study, we aimed to elucidate how regulatory nascent chains found in bacteria and plants interact with ribosomes and exert their physiological functions. Our findings revealed that both common and diverse mechanisms are involved in the interaction between regulatory nascent chains and ribosomes. Furthermore, we found that these diverse mechanisms can ultimately produce similar ribosome-inhibitory effects and achieve similar physiological functions.
